Yamashita Flower Farm, Inc.

We grow Mums, Matsumoto Asters, and Gerbera Daisies

Greenhouse exterior

Yamashita Flower Farm was established by my parents, Michio and Noriko Yamashita. Immigrants from Kagoshima, Japan, they first studied chrysanthemums working on the flower farm of a Japanese American family in Sunnyvale. In 1967, my parents and brother moved to the Salinas area, a fertile growing area with an excellent climate. Like many Salinas immigrants, they worked towards establishing businesses to support their families.

In 1973, Yamashita Flower Farm was established. My parents specialized in growing fancy grade chrysanthemums. My brother graduated from high school this year, and went on to Stanford, while remaining heavily involved in helping to establish Yamashita Flower Farm.

In 1973, my cousin, Kaneaki Hagihara, immigrated to the United States, and began working on the farm.

In 1977, my brother graduated from Stanford School of Engineering Master's program, and went on to work at Xerox, Hewlett Packard, and finally, Komag, where he is Vice President of Process Development.

Quality and Innovation

Over the years, greenhouses were built and growing techniques modified to improve flower quality and consistency.

In 1988, Yamashita Flower Farm began growing miniature carnations to supplement the chrysanthemum production.

In 1992, I graduated from Cal Poly State University, with a B.S. in Biology.

In 1998, Michio Yamashita passed away suddenly, at the age of 71, and I became president of the farm.

In 2005, we are beginning production of Matsumoto Asters and Gerbera daisies, on a small scale, while continuing to keep our main focus on chrysanthemums. We look forward to being able to offer some new products to our long standing customers, and to future customers. Studying new flowers to grow has made us re-examine all aspects of our farm operation, and we look forward to striving to improve as growers.

Our emphasis has been, and will continue to be focused on flowers that we can provide year round.

Organizations and Partnerships

Yamashita Flower Farm is a member of these organizations.

In 1997, our farm and our chrysanthemums were featured on a 90 second segment of P. Allen Smith Gardens, entitled "Football Mums." These segments are still airing on the Weather Channel, and the schedules are available at the P. Allen Smith web site (link below). The chrysanthemum segment is likely to be aired during the fall, the natural flowering season for a garden chrysanthemum. A frequent visitor to central California, P. Allen Smith now has a 30 minute gardening program airing on PBS.

In 2005, we are proud to announce our partnership with Rene Van Rems. He uses our flowers in preparing his new book, Rene's Bouquets: A Guide to Euro-Style Hand-Tied Bouquets.
